Procedure
2,6-Diethylaniline (120 grams), the diethyl acetal of 2-chloroacetaldehyde )78.8 grams) and sodium carbonate (42.4 grams) were charged into a glass reaction vessel equipped with a mechanical stirrer, thermometer and reflux condenser. The reaction mixture was heated at 150°C for a period of about 30 hours. After this time th mixture was filtered and the filrate was distilled to yield the desired product the diethyl acetate of 2-(2,6-diethylanilino)acetaldehyde having a boiling point of 130°C at 1 mm of Hg pressure.
