A stirred mixture of 2-(p-chlorophenyl)-2-methyl-4,5-dichloro-6-methoxyindan-1,3-dione (4.42 g., 0.012 mole) and pyridine hydrochloride (40 g.) is heated at 180°C. for 1 hour, then poured into water (500 ml.). The 2-(p-chlorophenyl)-2-methyl-4,5-dichloro-6-hydroxyindan-1,3-dione which separates is filtered and dried.
