97 ml of 10 N sodium hydroxide solution were added over one hour at less than 33° C. to a suspension of 175 g of ethyl 7-methyl-3-oxo-6-octenoate in 875 ml of water and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 hours and 25 ml of acetic acid were added thereto to obtain a pH of 7. An aqueous solution containing 396 g of pyruvaldehyde (16.8% by weight) was added to the mixture at 20° to 25° C. while maintaining a pH of 7 and the mixture was stirred for 20 hours at room temperature during which 30 ml of acetic acid were added to keep the pH at 7. 1000 ml of methylene chloride were added thereto and the mixture was stirred for 10 minutes. The decanted aqueous phase was extracted with methylene chloride and the combined organic phases were dried over sodium sulfate and evaporated to dryness under reduced pressure to obtain 175 g of 3-hydroxy-9-methyl-8-decene-2,5-dione.
