A solution of 19.72 g (0.17 mol) of methoxycarbonylmethyl isocyanate in 70 ml of dry toluene was added dropwise at room temperature to a stirred solution of 18.00 g (0.17 mol) of ethoxycarbonylhydrazine in 400 ml of dry toluene. The mixture was stirred at room temperature overnight and filtered. The colourless solid was washed with toluene, dried and recrystallized from ethyl acetate to give 28.54 g (76%) of 1-ethoxycarbonyl-4-methoxycarbonylmethyl-semicarbazide of melting point 116°-121° C.
