Reaction Steps

A solution of 150 mg (0.426 mmol) 2-(4-isopropyl-phenyl)-7-methoxy-1-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-1H-benzoimidazole-5-carbaldehyde in 2 ml THF is treated with excess methylmagnesiumiodide (prepared from 207 mg methyliodide and 35 mg magnesium in 5 ml diethyl ether). The resulting mixture is stirred at room temperature for 1 h. The reaction mixture is poured on water and extracted (3×) with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers are washed with water (2×) and brine, dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 180 mg of the title compound as an oil.
