Procedure
To a solution of 3-bromo-4-hydroxy-benzaldehyde (20 g) in acetic acid (200 ml) was added fuming nitric acid (4.18 ml). The resulting suspension was stirred for 3 h. The solid was collected by filtration. Another 420 μl of fuming nitric acid was added to the filtrate. After 45 min., water was added and the resulting precipitate was collected by filtration. The combined solids were washed with water and dried in vacuo.
