Procedure
To a solution of compound 8 (3.22 g, 7.55 mmol) in methanol (40 mL) was added sodium borohydride (0.373 g, 9.82 mmol) at 0° C. The resulting mixture was stirred at rt for 30 min. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure, diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (2×50 mL). The combined organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure to give crude product and used in the next step without further purification. 1H NMR 400 MHz (CDCl3) δ: 7.91 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 7.82 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H), 7.01 (s, 1H), 6.98 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 1H), 6.60 (s, 1H), 6.67 (d, J=8.6 Hz, 1H), 4.65 (s, 2H), 4.39 (q, J=7.0 Hz, 2H), 3.81 (s, 3H), 1.42 (s, 12H), 1.20 (t, J=7.0 Hz, 3H).
