Procedure

NH4COOH (15.5 g, 247 mmol) and 10% Pd/C (1.8 g) in water (2 mL) were added to a stirred solution of (4-benzyl-piperazin-1-yl)-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-methanone (8.6 g, 24.7 mmol) in MeOH (40 mL) and the resulting mixture was heated to reflux at 75° C. for 4 hrs. The reaction mixture was then filtered over celite and the filtrate evaporated. The resulting residue was dissolved in ethyl acetate, washed with 10% NaOH solution then brine solution, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 5.5 g (86%) of piperazin-1-yl-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-methanone. 1H NMR: (DMSO-d6): δ 7.8 (d, 1H), 7.7 (t, 1H), 7.6 (t, 1H), 7.4 (d, 1H), 3.5 (m, 2H), 3.0 (m, 2H), 2.7 (m, 5H).
