A mixture of the acetamide derivative from step 5 above (1.5 g), sodium metaperiodate (1.15 g), methanol (30 ml) and water (20 ml) was heated under reflux for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate concentrated to dryness. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel using ethyl acetate as eluent, giving N-(3-methoxybenzyl)-N-methyl-2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-2-(phenylsulfinyl)acetamide (1.2 g) as a viscous oil.
