A mixture of the acetamide derivative from step 3 above (4.1 g), sodium metaperiodate (3.3 g), methanol (50 ml) and water (30 ml) was heated under reflux for 1.5 hours. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate concentrated to dryness. The residue was purified by chromatography on silica gel using ethyl acetate as eluent, giving N-(3-methoxybenzyl)-N-methyl-2-(3,5-dimetoxyphenyl)-2-(phenylsulfinyl)acetamide (2.7 g) as a viscous oil.
