A mixture of 0.20 g (0.70 mmole) of 2-amino-4-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid amide (V.17), 0.18 g (0.84 mmole) of 4-dimethoxymethyl-2-fluoro-1-nitro-benzene (IV.2a) and 1.14 g (3.5 mmole) of cesium carbonate in 12 mL of dimethylformamide was heated to 60 degrees for 3 hours, then cooled. The mixture was poured into ice water, extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The combined organic layers were washed with water, brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by silica gel chromatography, eluting with hexanes-ethyl acetate (gradient 100:0-50:50) gave 0.23 g of 2-(5-dimethoxymethyl-2-nitro-phenylamino)-4-(2-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid amide (VI.17a) as a yellow solid.
