Trans-4-(aminomethyl)cyclohexanecarboxylic acid (6.29 g) is suspended in methanol (32 ml) and thereto is added dropwise thionyl chloride (6 ml) under ice-cooling. The reaction solution is warmed to room temperature, stirred overnight and concentrated under reduced pressure to dryness to give methyl trans-4-(aminomethyl)-cyclohexanecarboxylate hydrochloride (8.69 g).
