1,1,1-tris(Acetoxy)-1,1-dihydro-1,2-benziodoxol-3-(1H)-one (5.14 g, 12.12 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of methyl trans-4-(4-lactoylphenyl)cyclohexanecarboxylate (Intermediate 65-3, 1.758 g, 6.06 mmol) in DCM (25 mL). The mixture was stirred for 1 h, hexanes (50 mL) was added and the mixture was filtered through a pad of diatomaceous earth. Volatile material was removed by evaporation to give the title compound (1.55 g, 88%) as a solid that was used without further purification; 1H NMR δ 7.88 (2H, d), 7.45 (2H, d), 3.63 (3H, s), 2.70-2.57 (1H, m), 2.50 (3H, s), 2.48-2.36 (1H, m), 2.08-1.94 (2H, m), 1.90-1.80 (2H, m), 1.60-1.40 (4H, m); MS 311 (M+Na)+.
