A suspension of 87 (0.612 mmol, 0.296 g) in a 6 M aqueous H2SO4 solution (15 ml) was stirred at 85° C. for 5 h. The mixture was cooled to room temperature, the precipitate was filtered off and successively washed with water, saturated NaHCO3 solution, isopropanol and isopropyl ether to give 9-(methylamino)-6-(4-nitrophenyl)-pyrido[2′,1′:2,3]imidazo[4,5-c]isoquinolin-5(6H)-one (89) (0.064 g, yield=27%, purity (LC)=97%).
