To a solution of 4′-[(2-butyl-4-methyl-6-oxo-5-vinylpyrimidin-1(6H)-yl)methyl]biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (0.91 g) and sodium periodate (2.56 g) in acetone (10 mL)-acetonitrile (10 mL)-water (10 mL) was added osmium tetroxide (0.9 g, 7% polymer-bound catalyst), and the mixture was stirred for 4 hr. The insoluble material was filtered off through celite, and the filtrate was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with 1 M hydrochloric acid, saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a pale-yellow oil (0.66 g, 71%).
