To a solution of 4′-[(4-ethyl-5-formyl-6-oxo-2-propylpyrimidin-1(6H)-yl)methyl]biphenyl-2-carbonitrile (0.5 g) and morpholine (0.17 mL) in acetic acid (10 mL) was added sodium triacetoxyborohydride (0.41 g), and the mixture was stirred for 12 hr. The reaction mixture was diluted with ethyl acetate, washed with saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give the title compound as a pale-yellow oil (0.21 g, 35%).
