Procedure
4-chloro-anthracene-1,9-dicarboxylic acid (1.6 g, 5.35 mmol) was placed in a 50 ml flask and mixed with 25 ml of acetic anhydride. The mixture was refluxed under argon at 170° C. for six hours and left at room temperature overnight to crystallize. An orange precipitate was collected by filtration, washed five times with dry diethyl ether (15 ml), and dried under vacuum overnight. The yield was 93%.
