Procedure
A mixture of 5′-Cyano-2′-methyl-biphenyl-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (850 mg) and sodium hydroxide (2M, 15 ml) in ethanol (30 ml) was stirred at 20 C for 18 h. The ethanol was then evaporated and the residue acidified. The resulting solid was collected by filtration and was then purified on silica gel. Gradient elution with 0-30% 20:8:1 CH2Cl2/EtOH/NH3 in CH2Cl2 gave the title compound as a white solid (665 mg).
