Diethyl 2-butyl-2-(2-fluorobenzyloxy)malonate was prepared by reaction of 2-fluorobenzyl alcohol with diethyl 2-bromo-2-butylmalonate and the crude ester was reduced, without purification, with lithium aluminum hydride, all according to the method of Example 31, part A, to give 2-butyl-2-(2-fluorobenzyloxy)-1,3-propanediol, b.p. 140°-150°/0.01 mm, nD25 1.5555, m.p. 66°-67°.
