Procedure

A stirred mixture of 2-methyl-2-propargyl-5-methoxy-6,7-dichloro-1-indanone (11 g., 0.039 mole) and pyridine hydrochloride (110 g.) is heated at 185° C. for one hour, then poured into water (500 ml.). The product which separates is recrystallized from ethanol-water affording 6.5 g. of 2-(2-chloroallyl)-2-methyl-5-hydroxy-6,7-dichloro-1-indanone, m.p. 183° C.
