Reaction Steps
A solution of ethyl (1-oxo-2-isopropyl-2-methyl-6,7-dichloro-5-indanyloxy)acetate (3.6 g., 0.01 mole, N-bromosuccinimide (2.4 g., 0.0134 mole) and benzoyl peroxide (20 mg.) in carbon tetrachloride is refluxed 4 hours, cooled and filtered free of succinimide. The solvent is evaporated and the crude product is purified by column chromatography and then recrystallized from cyclohexane to afford substantially pure ethyl (1-oxo-2-isopropyl-2-methyl-3-bromo-6,7-dichloro-5-indanyloxy)acetate, m.p. 83°-85° C.
