Procedure

In analogy to the above-described procedure, α-picoline was used as a starting material to prepare bis-N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-α-picolinium sulfate, which has the formula ##STR5## This compound was found to have a refractive index of nD20 =1.5268. Similarly, γ-picoline was used as a starting material to prepare bis-N-(2,3-dihydroxypropyl)-γ-picolinium sulfate, which has the formula ##STR6## and which had a refractive index of nD20 =1.5272.
