To a solution of 2,5-dimethyl-6-aminophenol (0.67 g, 4.9 mmol) in methylenechloride, solid ethyl 2-chloroiminoacetate hydrochloride (0.85 g, 4.9 mmol)was added. The resultant slurry was stirred at room temperature for 18 hours, then filtered through a plug of diatomaceous earth and concentratedunder reduced pressure (15 torr). The solid residue was subjected to columnchromatography on silica gel (50 g, eluted with 1% methanol in chloroform).Collection and concentration of appropriate fractions yielded the title benzoxazole.
