A solution of 1,2-dihydro-1-carboethoxy-2-diphenylmethyl-3H-indazol-3-one (1.4 g) in ethanol (15 ml) containing potassium hydroxide (820 mg) was heated at 80° C. for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (50 ml) and extracted with ether. The extracts were discarded. The aqueous phase was acidified to pH2 with 2M hydrochloric acid and extracted with methylene chloride. These extracts were dried (MgSO4) and evaporated. The residue was recrystallised from acetone/ether to give 1,2-dihydro-2-diphenylmethyl-3H-indazol-3-one as a solid (0.6 g), m.p. 179-181° C.
