A solution of (4-hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl)-acetic acid (190 g, 0.95 mol) and concentrated sulfuric acid (50 ml) in methanol (1.51) is refluxed for 18 hours. The suspension is cooled and filtered to give methyl(4-hydroxy-2-mercapto-6-methyl-5-pyrimidinyl)-acetate (160 g, 79%). 1H-NMR (DMSO):12.4 (s, 1H); 12.2 (s, 1H); 3.6 (s, 3H); 3.4 (s, 2H), 2.1 (s, 3H).
