Reaction Steps

To a suspension of 2-nitromandelic acid (0.86 g, 4.4 mmol) in chloroform (10 mL) with stirring is added O-t-butyl-N,N'-diisopropylisourea (2.7 g, 13 mmol). The resulting mixture is stirred overnight, then filtered. The filtrate is concentrated in vacuo, and the residue purified by flash chromatography using EtOAc/chloroform (0%→5%→10%), giving t-butyl 2-nitromandelate (18) as 0.99 g (90%) of a pale brown clear oil.
