Procedure

2-(1-Naphthyl)-1,4,7,10,13-pentaazacyclopentadecane prepared as in Example 32H (0.23 g, 0.67 mmol) was added to a refluxing anhydrous MeOH solution (50 ml) containing anhydrous manganese(II) chloride (84.4 mg, 0.671 mmol) under a dry nitrogen atmosphere. The solution was refluxed overnight and then filtered through celite. The solution was taken to dryness and the residue was redissolved in hot EtOH (10 ml). The resultant yellowish solution was filtered through celite and ethyl ether (30 ml) was added. A flocculent yellowish precipitate formed which was filtered and discarded. The filtrate was diluted to 50 ml with ethyl ether and allowed to sit undisturbed for 4 days. A white microcrystalline precipitate was collected by filtration to give 0.144 g (46% yield) of product after drying in vacuo: FAB mass spectrum (NBA) m/z (relative intensity) 466 (M+, 3), 431/433 [(M+ -Cl), 100/32]; Anal. calcd for C20H31N5MnCl2 : C, 51.40; H, 6.69; N, 14.99. Found: C, 52.10; H, 6.73; N, 14.71.
