Procedure
A mixture of methyl 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-methanesulfonylphenyl)propionic acid (2.8 g, 9.0 mmol), 1 N sodium hydroxide (19 mL), and methanol (25 mL) was stirred at room temperature for 24 h. The reaction mixture was concentrated in vacuo to remove the methanol and 2 N HCl (9 mL) was slowly added at 0° C. to give white crystals of 3-cyclopentyl-2-(4-methanesulfonylphenyl)propionic acid. Yield: 2.3 g (87%). mp: 160-161° C. 1H-NMR (CDCl3, δ ppm): 7.90 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 2H); 7.54 (d, J=8.2 Hz, 2H); 3.72 (t, J=7.8 Hz, 1H); 3.05 (s, 3H); 2.15-2.08 (m, 1H); 1.9-1.45 (m, 8H); 1.05-1.20 (m, 2H).
