To a solution of 6-amino-pyridin-2-ol (5 g, 45.4 mmol) in glacial acetic acid (60 mL) was added bromine (2.33 mL, 45.4 mmol) under Ar atmosphere. The mixture was stirred for 20 minutes, then water was added and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic extracts were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to dryness to obtain crude 6-amino-5-bromo-pyridin-2-ol (4.53 g).
