A solution of 0.325 g (1.0 mmol) of 2-methoxy-4-methyl-6-(3-trifluoromethyl-phenyl)-nicotinic acid methyl ester (intermediate 12C) in 10 ml of CH2Cl2 was cooled down to 0° C., 2.0 ml (2.0 mmol) of a solution of boron tribromide (1 molar in CH2Cl2) was added drop by drop and the reaction mixture was subsequently warmed up to RT. After two hours, 1.0 ml of MeOH was added and 90 min later, the reaction mixture was evaporated. The crude intermediate formed was used without purification in the next step.
