Procedure

To a 100 ml conical flask was add 19.5 g formalin (37 wt % aqueous formaldehyde) and 44 g water. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 8.9 using 5 wt % Na2CO3. 10 g melamine and 0.64 g NaCl were added and stirred for 10 minutes at room temperature. The mixture was heated to 62° C. and stirred until the mixture became clear. This mixture is hereinafter referred to as Prepolymer (1) and consists of 23.2 wt % of trimethyloyl melamine in water.
