A mixture of (4-(methylamino)-2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-5-yl)methanol (22.0 g, 119 mmol) and MnO2 (44 g, 714 mmol) in CHCl3 (300 mL) was stirred at RT for 3 h. The reaction was filtered and the filtrate concentrated to give 4-(methylamino)-2-(methylsulfanyl)pyrimidine-5-carbaldehyde as a pale solid (20 g, 92% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6): δ 9.71 (s, 1H), 8.60 (brs, 1H), 8.49 (s, 1H), 2.96 (d, J=4.8 Hz, 3H), 2.48 (s, 3H).
