Procedure

7N Ammonia in methanol (10 mL) was added to 3,3-diethyl-2(3H)-benzofuranone (Example 266a, 1.14 g) and the reaction stirred at room temperature for 16 h. 880 Ammonia (20 mL) was added and the mixture stirred for 5 h. The reaction mixture was diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated to afford crude product (1.21 g).
