A solution of methyl 2-(1,1,1-trifluoro-2-methylpropan-2-yl)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline-6-carboxylate (0.97 g, 3.2 mmol) in methanol (20 mL) was treated with 1 M aqueous sodium hydroxide (6 mL, 2 equiv), and the mixture was heated to reflux. After 1.5 h the cooled mixture was diluted with water (40 mL), adjusted to pH 6 with H3PO4, and extracted with DCM (3×20 mL). The combined organic layers were dried (Na2SO4), filtered and concentrated to a solid (0.76 g, 82%). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) δ 12.34 (br s, 1H), 7.55 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 1H), 7.41 (d, J=8.1 Hz, 1H), 2.99-2.83 (m, 4H), 2.77-2.69 (m, 1H), 2.19-2.11 (m, 1H), 1.91-1.81 (m, 1H), 1.54 (s, 6H); m/z=288.4 (M+H)+.
