Reaction Steps
0.8 g of anhydrous aluminum chloride is added to 5 ml of 4-fluoranisole and 0.9 g of 2-hydroxy-4-methylene-2-trifluoromethyl-valeric acid ethyl ester. After 40 hours of stirring at room temperature, it is added to ice-cooled 2N hydrochloric acid and extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate phase is washed with 1N hydrochloric acid and water, dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated by evaporation. After chromatography on silica gel with hexane/ethyl acetate (1:1), 1 g of 4-(5-fluoro-2-methoxyphenyl)-2-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-trifluoromethyl-valeric acid ethyl ester, melting point 38-390° C., is obtained.
