Procedure

5-Carboxy-2-ethylbenzo[b]furan (2.48 g) and concentrated sulfuric acid (0.30 g) were stirred with heating in methanol (50 ml) at 60° C. for 16 hr. The reaction mixture was concentrated and chloroform mixture was added. The mixture was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate. The chloroform layer was separated, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to give the objective compound (2.40 g).
