Procedure
7-Carboxy-3-ethylbenzo[b]thiophene (3.20 g) and concentrated sulfuric acid were stirred in methanol (100 ml) at 60° C. for 16 hr. The reaction mixture was concentrated and chloroform mixture was added thereto. The mixture was washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium hydrogencarbonate. The chloroform was separated, and the residue was dried over magnesium sulfate, and concentrated to give the objective compound (3.04 g).
