Reaction Steps

Using a procedure similar to that described above in Example 3A, 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl N-benzyl-N-methylaminomethyl ketone methanesulfonate is reacted with two mole equivalents of 2,2-dimethylpentanoyl chloride in 2,2-dimethylpentanoic acid to yield 3,4-bis(2,2-dimethylpentanoyloxy)phenyl N-benzyl-N-methylaminomethyl ketone methanesulfonate as a white crystalline solid. This salt is debenzylated by catalytic hydrogenation in the presence of palladium-on-charcoal hydrogenation catalyst, in the same manner as the debenzylation procedure described above in Example 124, to yield 3,4-bis(2,2-dimethylpentanoyloxy)phenyl methylaminomethyl ketone methanesulfonate as a white crystalline solid. This salt is catalytically hydrogenated in anhydrous ethyl alcohol in the presence of 10 percent palladium-on-charcoal hydrogenation catalyst until one mole equivalent of hydrogen is absorbed. There is thus obtained 3,4-bis(2,2-dimethylpentanolyoxy)-alpha-(methylaminomethyl)benzyl alcohol methanesulfonate as a white crystalline solid.
