Procedure
A mixture of 8.0 g of 4,5-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-1H-imidazole-2-thiol, 4.0 g of methyl iodide and 100 ml of ethanol was heated at reflux for 4 hours. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue distributed between methylene chloride and 10% aqueous NaHCO3 solution. The organic layer was dried and evaporated to give 8.8 g of 4,5-bis(4-chlorophenyl)-4,5-dihydro-2-(methylthio)-1H-imidazole as a colorless oil. The NMR spectrum was consistent with this structure. The hydrochloride salt was prepared with dry hydrogen chloride gas in ether to give the title compound as colorless crystals (5.3 g), m.p. 236° dec.
