8.5 g of tert.-butyl (4S)-1-methyl-3-benzyloxycarbonyl-2-oxo-imidazolidine-4-carboxylate are dissolved in 200 ml of methanol, and 0.1 g of palladium-black is added thereto. The mixture is shaken at room temperature in hydrogen gas atmosphere under atmospheric pressure. After the reaction the catalyst is removed by filtration, and the filtrate is condensed under reduced pressure. The residue obtained is washed with n-hexane. 5.0 g of tert.-butyl (4S)-1-methyl-2-oxo-imidazolidine-4-carboxylate are obtained as colorless crystals. Yield: 98.2% M.p. 135°-136° C.
