A mixture of 4,9-dihydro-4,9-dioxo-1H-cyclohepta[b]pyridine-3-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (5.5 g, described in example 2) and 5% aqueous HCl (v/v, 100 ml) was heated at reflux for 2 hr. The reaction mixture was cooled. The precipitate was collected and washed with water and acetone to give 4.38 g of the title compound, nmr (DMSO-d6) δ7.5 (m, 4H), 8.55 (s, 1H), 8.95 (broad, 1H), 10.8 (s, 1H).
