Procedure
A 1 N aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide (35 ml.) was added to a solution of methyl 2-[4-chloro-2-(4-nitrobenzoyl)phenoxy]acetate (11.5 g.) in dioxane (60 ml.) and stirred at room temperature for 1.5 hours. Dioxane was distilled off under reduced pressure, and the residue was washed with ethyl acetate, adjusted to pH 1 with 10% hydrochloric acid and then extracted with ethyl acetate (each 400 ml. and 100 ml.). The extracts were washed with a saturated aqueous solution of sodium chloride, dried over magnesium sulfate and then concentrated under reduced pressure to a volume of about 100 ml. The precipitating crystals were collected by filtration to give 2-[4-chloro-2-(4-nitrobenzoyl)phenoxy]acetic acid (10.1 g.).
