Procedure

To 350 ml of dry pyridine was added 14.7 g of the anhydride (ix) in a 3-neck flask with reflux condenser, drying tube, magnetic stirrer and a thermometer. The flask was cooled with an ice/H2O bath and dry reagent grade CH3NH2 was passed into the mixture. The flask was then allowed to warm up to room temperature and refluxed for 20 hours.
