Reaction Steps

Proceeding in a manner similar to that described in part A of Example 10, 29.6 g (0.20 mole) of phthalic anhydride and 35.2 g (0.20 mole) of 5-nitro-2-methylindole were interacted in 100 ml of ethylene dichloride to obtain 2-[(2-methyl-5-nitro-3-indolyl)carbonyl]benzoic acid (Formula VIII: R0 =R1 =R2 =R3 =R6 =H; R5 =CH3 ; Y1 =5-NO2), a red brown solid melting at 144°-148° C. and showing a strong carbonyl absorption maximum at 1700 cm-1 in the infrared spectrum.
