Procedure

A mixture of 4.4 g of methyl α-(phenoxy)-α-[p-(p-chlorophenoxy)phenyl]acetate, 27 g of 20% KOH, and 20 ml of methanol is refluxed overnight. After cooling to room temperature, the methanol is removed at reduced pressure. The residue is dissolved in 100 ml of H2O and extracted with 100 ml of ether. The aqueous layer is acidified with concentrated HCl and a yellow oil separates. The mixture is extracted with two 50 ml portions of chloroform. The combined extracts are washed with 50 ml of water and saturated brine and dried over MgSO4. Evaporation of the solvent at reduced pressure affords the product as a white solid, mp 114°-115.5° C, after trituration with petroleum ether.
