Procedure
A one liter three-neck flask equipped with a stirrer, condenser, and heating mantle is charged with 31.4 g (0.156 mole) of N-acetylleucine ethyl ester, 34.7 g (0.156 mole) of phosphorus pentasulfide, and 250 ml of chloroform, and the mixture is heated under reflux for 24 hours while care is taken to exclude moisture. The reaction mixture is then cooled and made basic with 10% aqueous potassium hydroxide.
