Under the conditions of example 1A, 500 mg of 5-[4-hydroxy-3-(2-methoxycarbonylethyl)-Phenyl]-5-oxo-pentanoic acid methyl ester is reacted with 436 mg of (1E)-6-bromo-l-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1-hexene, worked up and the crude product is chromatographed on silica gel with hexane/ethyl acetate (0-15% ethyl acetate). 657 mg of 5-[3-(2-methoxycarbonylethyl)-4-[6-(4-methoxyphenyl)-( 5E)-5-hexenyloxy]-phenyl]-5-oxo-pentanoic acid methyl ester is obtained as oil.
