b 2-Cyano-5-(3-nitropyrid-4-ylamino)indane (12.46 gm, 44.5 mmol) was suspended in methanol/dichloromethane=1.1 (750 ml) and hydrogenated at 20° C. and 30 p.s.i. over 10% palladium on charcoal (1.25 g) for 2 hours. The catalyst was filtered off and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to give 5-(3-aminopyrid-4-ylamino)-2-cyanoindane (12.28 g, ca quantitative) as a yellow solid, m.p. 98°-100° C.
