Procedure

In 100 ml of dichloroethane were dissolved 10 g of 2-(methylamino)-3,7,11-trimethyl-1,3-dodecanediol and 8.7 g of pyridine and the solution was cooled to -30° C. To this solution was added 7.2 g of nicotinoyl chloride hydrochloride gradually and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. After the reaction was completed, the reaction mixture was poured into water and extracted with dichloroethane. The organic layer was washed with aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate and after drying over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, the solvent was distilled off. Finally, the residue was subjected to silica gel column chromatography (elution with ethanol) to give 12.0 g of N-methyl-N-(1,3-dihydroxy3,7,11-trimethyldodecan-2-yl)nicotinamide [Compound (66)]. Yield 93%.
