Procedure
A solution of 11.92 g of methyl 7-bromomethylbenzofuran-2-carboxylate and 5.57 g of sodium cyanide in 150 ml of dimethyl sulphoxide is stirred at room temperature over 1 hour. The reaction mixture is poured onto water and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×). The combined organic phases are washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulphate and concentrated by evaporation. The title compound is obtained as a white solid from the residue by means of flash chromatography (SiO2 60F). Rf=0.23 (dichloromethane); Rt=3.86.
